Meet this years' host: Esbjerg

In Esbjerg Municipality, we look forward to hosting the "KLAP – theatre for young audiences" from April 14 to 21, 2024. We have had the pleasure before, and most recently, we hosted the festival in 2022, and we know it will be a magical week. Experiencing the many talented theater professionals and fantastic performances taking over the cities in our municipality, letting imagination run wild, is truly an unforgettable experience. We hope that many children, young people, and families get a glimpse into the enchanting world of theater.

The beautiful southwestern corner
Esbjerg is situated in the beautiful southwestern corner of Denmark, and our municipality is one of the country's largest. Approximately 115,000 people live here, with Esbjerg being the main city, boasting around 72,000 inhabitants, making it Denmark's fifth-largest city. In just 150 years, Esbjerg has grown from almost nothing into a dynamic city with energy as its driving force. As a contrast to young Esbjerg, we have Ribe, the oldest town in Denmark, brimming with history and a unique atmosphere. The town of Bramming also contributes to the diversity of our municipality, as do our many vibrant and active local communities.

Culture in everyday life
In Esbjerg Municipality, culture is an integral part of everyday life. We believe that cultural experiences bring joy and pride, contributing to putting our municipality on the map. We have strong cultural centers covering all genres, and their activities bring great joy and benefit to both the audience and performing artists.

Our cultural school has a long and proud history, playing a crucial role in fostering both the breadth and the development of talents in music, visual arts, drama, and ballet. The Ministry of Culture has designated Esbjerg as a talent municipality, and in fact, the Esbjerg Cultural School was the first in the country to establish basic courses where young artists can explore and develop their talents alongside their education. Similar opportunities exist in the world of sports, where Esbjerg is a Team Denmark elite municipality, providing excellent conditions for sports talents.

We are active and enjoy the proximity of the sea, naturally seeking out the waves. On the new harbor island, Esbjerg Strand, the award-winning Maritime Center brings together the city's maritime associations, and in the same area, Aqtiv's water sports activities are a haven for the city's water enthusiasts.

National park and world heritage
Surrounding us is exceptional nature, and we are fortunate to be part of an area that is both a national park and a UNESCO World Heritage site. The Wadden Sea and the marshland are among the world's most valuable tidal areas, where you can experience seals and the "black sun" phenomenon or take a walk on the mudflats to collect oysters. In the Wadden Sea lies Mandø, well on its way to becoming a Dark Sky Park, where darkness provides tranquility to nature and wildlife, offering an opportunity to immerse oneself in the starry sky.

In Esbjerg Municipality, we think green and have set an ambitious sustainable agenda. The goal is to be carbon-neutral by 2030, and we are happy to lead in the green transition, both at home and on a global scale, where Esbjerg represents Denmark in the alliance of the world's leading energy cities.

Welcome to Esbjerg
We hope that you will get a sense of all this when you visit Esbjerg Municipality for the KLAP – theatre for young audiences. We look forward to welcoming you and hope you have exciting and memorable days here with us.

Warm welcome and enjoy your stay.
